Social Media Scheduler Software: Queues, Calendars, and Team Approvals

A scheduler is queues, networks, approvals, and reporting — not email/SMS journeys or a full social suite.

A social media scheduler is software that drafts, queues, publishes, and reports posts across networks. Instagram-only grid tools, enterprise listening suites, and “post to all socials” apps share search results. The buying job is still: which networks, who approves, how many accounts, and what analytics you actually get.

Triggered email/SMS journeys are marketing automation, not a calendar of Reels. HighLevel’s Social Planner can sit beside CRM; it is not automatically the winner against Buffer or Later. Instagram and Facebook post-scheduler wording folds here. Full social-media management software (listening, social inbox, enterprise engagement) is a heavier purchase than a calendar and queue — Buffer and Later are schedulers first; Hootsuite/Sprout-class suites are named later as a different job.

What to compare (not a feature dump)

  • Supported networks and profile types. Buffer’s pricing page documents which channels get auto-publish vs reminder-to-post (Instagram personal vs business, Facebook groups, TikTok business, and so on).
  • Scheduling model. Queue, visual calendar, drafts, first comment, bulk/reminder publishing.
  • Team workflow. Approvals and access levels — Buffer Team only, Later Growth+ for internal/external approval.
  • Meter. Per channel (Buffer) vs social sets (Later) vs per seat (enterprise suites). Agencies feel this immediately.
  • Analytics depth. 30-day Buffer Free insights vs Later’s 3-month / 1-year / 2-year windows by plan.

Buffer — per-channel publishing with a usable free plan

Buffer public plans (official pricing page)
CriterionMeterUsers / approvals
Free$0 · up to 3 channels · 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time1 user · no approval workflow
EssentialsFrom $6/channel/month (1–10 channels); volume discounts above that1 user
TeamFrom $12/channel/month (1–10 channels)Unlimited users · approval workflows · access levels

Buffer documents a 14-day trial of paid plans and annual billing at about 20% off. Choose Buffer when you needed a calendar and queue, not Hootsuite-class listening.

Later — visual planner sold in social sets

Later’s pricing page (yearly display, 2026-08-28) lists Starter at $18.75/month billed yearly (1 social set / 8 profiles, 1 user, 30 posts per profile per month, 3 months of analytics), Growth at $37.50/month billed yearly (2 sets, 2 users, 180 posts, approvals, inbox), and Scale at $82.50/month billed yearly (6 sets, 4 users, unlimited posts, custom analytics). A social set is one profile from each supported network (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Snapchat). Choose Later when the constraint is visual Instagram / TikTok planning plus a link-in-bio, not a cheap three-channel queue.

HighLevel Social Planner — CRM-adjacent, not a specialist default

HighLevel’s Social Planner setup article (retrieved 2026-08-28) documents drafting, scheduling, publishing, and tracking from one calendar, including Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, HighLevel Community, and Bluesky. Post types, media options, and analytics vary by platform. The same article documents drafts, approval requests, recurring posts, Category Queues, and bulk uploads (up to 90 posts per CSV/XLSX file). That is a fit when posts must share a contact record and workflows already live in HighLevel. It is the wrong default when you needed Buffer’s channel math, Later’s visual calendar, or an enterprise listening suite. Prices: GoHighLevel pricing.

In-house brand versus agency books

A single brand with three channels can stay on Buffer Free until the 10-post queue or the missing approval workflow becomes the bottleneck. Then Essentials is still one user; approvals require Team. Later’s Starter is one social set and 30 posts per profile per month — fine for one Instagram-led brand, painful the moment you add a second client’s full network stack (that is a second set, not a second “channel” in Buffer’s sense). Do not convert $6/channel into Later’s set price; the meters are not the same object.

Hootsuite- and Sprout-class listening/engagement suites appear in the same SERP. Public dollars for those suites were not captured as a clean table in this pass and are omitted. Treat them as a different purchase when social customer care and listening are the job, not when you needed a calendar. HighLevel Social Planner is the wrong default in that listening fight as well: it is a CRM-adjacent publisher for accounts already in HighLevel.
